Ooty- The Best Place To Spend Your Holiday

Ooty, the Scotland of the East, is one of the most popular destinations in India. Ooty sits at the centre point of the Nilgiri ranges, at the height of 7,440 ft. It is one of the important tourist spot of Tamil Nadu. It is known as the queen of all hill station.

Ooty is a series of piquant montages: the sun lighting up one hill even as the other beside remains shrouded in green velvet. Ooty is a very attractive hill station that is pleasant all through the year. One can visit at any time according to their choice and there is no wrong time to visit this place.
Way Up to Ooty

Reaching Ooty:-
Ooty is 301 km from Bangalore, 537 km from Chennai, 160 km from Mysore, 1 87 km from Kozhikodu, 280 km from Kochi and 90 km from Coimbatore. You can reach there by train, air or road.
Route from Bangalore: - SH17 to Bandipur via Mysore and Nanjangud.
Nearest Airport: Coimbatore.
Nearest Railhead: Mettupalayam.

Things To See And Do:-
1. The Botanical Garden
Ooty Botanical Garden attracts the tourist from all over the world. The main attraction here is the fossilized tree trunk – all of 20 million years old. A Summer Festival is held here each year in May, with a grand Flower Show taking centre-stage.

2. The Rose Garden
The rose garden is all of 10 acres, and in winter when the 1, 919 varieties of roses of all hues, pink, red orange, pale green, even black are out, a stroll in the scented garden is an unforgettable experience.
3. The Children’s Park
There is a children’s park at the eastern end of the lake. This amusement park is 3 km away on the Coonoor road and has a number of fun rides.

4. Ooty Lake
Ooty Lake is famously known as ‘Ooty Boat House’. John Sullivan, the first Collector and virtual founder of Ooty, constructed this lake in 1824. Boating is possible every day from 8 am to 6 pm.


5. Pony Ride
The pony rides near the Ooty lake view, a trip on the Nilgiri Mountain Express and a visit to the Botanical Gardens are also guaranteed to delight.

6. Toy Train
The toy train with blue and cream colour with steam engine is very popular among tourist people. The ‘Nilgiris toy train' connect Ooty to Mettupalayam, at the foot of the Nilgiris.

7. Lamb’s Rock
It is a perfect picnic spot and anyone is sure to thoroughly enjoy a day's outing in Lamb's Rock in Ooty. It offers enchanting views of the plains of Coimbatore and the tea estates.

8. St. Stephen’s Church
St. Stephen’s Church built in 1829, is the oldest church in the Nilgiris. Its huge wooden beams came from the palace of Tipu Sultan and the cemetery contains the graves of many old-timers, both British and Indian.

9. Kandal Church
The Kandal Church actually houses a relic of the true cross on which Christ was crucified. Special Novena Prayers and Holy Masses are offered every Friday at this shrine and its feast is held on May 3rd.

10. Dodda Betta
Dodda Betta is one of the highest peaks in south India, located at a distance of 10 km from Ooty. Dodda Betta commands the juncture of the Western and Eastern Ghats, offering unmatched vistas of the Nilgiris. It offers an unbelievable beautiful view of the surrounding topography.

11. Wenlock Downs
Wenlock Downs, the most popular picnic spot, is a vast expanse of undulating landscape which used to be the ground for the Ooty hunt; now a great walk along grassy knolls and quiet roads.

12. Ninth Mile and Sandy Nallah
These are the two popular spot for film shoots in Ooty.

Shopping:-
The Toda tribes of the Nilgiris weave shawls and runners in the distinctive colours of red, black and white, sold in the shops at Charing Cross in Ooty, as is silver jewellery, which ironically, the Todas adorn their buffaloes with.
Ooty is famous for its tea, aromatic oils and essences, and spices. Hand-made chocolates in every flavor can be found in every other shop on Ooty’s commercial road. Try the unpretentious ‘King Star’ on commercial road which stocks a variety of chocolates and fudge.
The Big Shop on commercial road is the haunt of those who like to collect jewellery and artifacts of unusual design. Their in-house jewelers replicate the traditional Toda silver jewellery in gold.
The Tamil Nadu State Handicraft Centre, Pumpoohar on commercial road, is another place where you can pick up handicrafts.

Important Places around Ooty:-
1. Pykara River
It is located about 21 km from Ooty on the Ooty-Mysore road. This blue lake is surrounded by dense shoals, Toda settlements and shallow downs. There is a TTDC boathouse and restaurant at Pykara.

2. Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary
Mudumalai, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, has evergreen forests, grasslands, swamps and a wide variety of wildlife from elephant, gaur, tigers and panthers to deer, wild boar and monitor lizards can be found there. At night, the glow-worms provide alternate lighting. Within the sanctuary is an elephant camp called ‘Theppakkadu’, where there is a Forest Rest House.

3. Avalachi Dam
It is located at a distance of 28 km from Ooty. An exotic experience of mountain trekking is possible in this place. There is a ‘trout farm’ near the dam which is the only place in India where trout fish grows, trout fishes grow only in fresh water.

4. Glenmorgan Tea Estate
Glenmorgan Tea Estate, on the Mysore Road, is an ecologically rich spot which has a special attraction: the Electricity Board offers a winch service from Glenmorgan View Point to the Power House of Singara Tea Estate.

5. Gudalur
This coffee and pepper town is the gateway to the Nilgiris from Kerala and Karnataka, in the lower plateau of the Blue Mountains.

6. Kalhatti Water Falls
The height of the water falls is about 122 feet. It is about 13 km away from Ooty. It is the best place for people who love hiking, trekking and bird watching.

1. Howard Johnson Monarch
It has Coy Boy Bar and disco and lots of game for kids. It is the biggest hotel in town.
2. TTDC’s Hotel Tamil Nadu
It has rooms and cottages. Boat riding is possible here. It is a medium budget hotel.
3. Hotel Dasaprakash
It is famous for South Indian ‘Tali Meal’.
4. Holiday Inn Gem Park
It has a temperature controlled swimming pool and a health club.
5. Hotel Blue Hill International
Laundry, attached bath, travel desk, car parking, room service, restaurant etc. are the important facilities of this hotel.
6. Hotel Khems
It has a travel counter and a multi cuisine restaurant. Pony riding and spacious parking is possible here. In-house doctor is also available at any time.
7. Hotel Lakeview
There is a restaurant, conference hall and a gift shop. Horse riding is also possible.
8. Hotel Nahar Nilgiris
Facilities in this hotel are H/C running water, TV, bathtub, laundry, 24hrs room service, doctor-on-call, STD from room, travel desk etc.
9. Hotel Mayura Sudarshan
Room service, tours and taxi service are possible in this hotel.
10. Hotel Alakapuri
It is in Ettines Road. Facilities – TV, geyser, tour, restaurant.
11. Nilgiri Woodlands Hotel
This hotel has a massage centre. Other facilities are laundry, travel desk, doctor-on-call, room service and restaurant.
12. Hotel Ooty Gate
This hotel has a doctor, health club, restaurant and lockers.
13. Reflections Guest House
Facilities – hot water, dining room, laundry, travel arrangement, restaurant etc.
14. Sterling Days Inn – Fern Hill
There is a grocery shop, restaurant, gift shop and a hobby studio. There are also facilities for trekking and indoor games.
15. The Window Hill
Facilities – children’s garden, carom room, chess etc.

  1. One of the best place to see the wonder of the world is the Iceland. It is best known for its beautiful glaziers, waterfalls and landscapes. Hotel accommodation in Iceland is not a problem, it has plenty of quality and affordable hotel accommodation.
