KURUKSHETRA- A Town Not To Be Missed

To the casual passerby, Kurukshetra is just a truck stop between Delhi and Ambala. But for a scholar, archaeologist, pilgrim or anyone remotely interested in the mighty Indian epic, the Mahabharata, this is a town not to be missed.

Besides being the battlefield where the bloody battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas raged, there are multiple places that are linked to events in the epic. For instance, Bhishma Kund is a sacred tank which marks the spot where the mighty patriarch Bheeshma lay mortally wounded, and where an arrow shot by Arjuna brought the waters of the Ganga, his true mother, to quench his thirst.

Brahma Sarovar is a vast water body that is supposed to mark the actual spot of creation of the universe. Kurukshetra is also sanctified by the presence of Krishna. The Bhagavad Gita was first spoken at Jyotisar, which is today a conglomerate off bathing ghats and temples and banyan said to have sprung from the original tree beneath which Krishna advised Arjuna.

The Krishna Museum is also a fascinating collection of artefacts pertaining to both Krishna and Mahabharata, many of which were excavated in and around the area. To the believer, in Kurukshetra one walks in the footsteps of heroes.
